Introducing
the Oncology Section’s HIV SIG chair:
Michaele R. Smith, PT, MEd
CDR, US Public Health Service
Passion: Michaele’s passion is for working with students
to make a difference through Education.
Education
Michaele R. Smith obtained a B.S. degree in physical therapy
from Howard University and most recently completed an M.Ed at
George Mason University. She has completed the Bobath (NDT) neuro-developmental
(NDT) certification in the treatment of children. And is
also a credentialed clinical education instructor through the
American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Professional
Michaele is a senior physical therapist, Commander
in the U.S. Public Health Service, and Education Coordinator
of the Physical Therapy section. As Commander in the U.S. Public
Health Service, she is the Discipline Specific Liaison and Mentoring
Chairperson of the Therapist Professional Advisory Committee
(TPAC). She is currently coordinator of the post graduate
Clinical Research Training Fellowship at the National Institutes
of Health. Her clinical and research interests are in the
areas of pediatric HIV infection, genetics, Juvenile Dermatomyositis,
NOMID syndrome and stroke rehabilitation.
Affiliations
Michaele is a member of the Oncology Section of the American
Physical Therapy Association. She has lectured and
written articles on the topic of pediatric HIV infection, Juvenile
Dermatomyositis and genetics at local, national and international
conferences.
Awards
Commander Smith has received several awards for coordinating
conferences developing programs and mentoring potential students
and colleagues.
Personal
Michaele is married with two teenage children. Her favorite
pastime is watching her teenager daughter play competitive softball,
or watching any sports activity, and reading.
