Meet an Oncology Member Spotlight

June 2008

Kathie Hummel-Berry Introducing the Oncology Section's newest board member, Julie A. Hobbs, PT, DPT, Ph.D., CHES

PASSION
I love being a physical therapist! Having the good fortune to follow my passion for physical therapy is one of life's wonderful gifts. I have enjoyed every step in my career and have a zeal for helping people reach their greatest potential. Removing barriers so that individuals can optimize their functional outcome within their physical abilities truly energizes me.

EDUCATION
I received my B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; my M.S. in Health Education and Promotion and my Ph.D. in Preventive Medicine and Community Health with a focus on Healthcare Epidemiology, both from the University of Texas Medical Branch; and my DPT from Simmons College. I am also a Certified Health Education Specialist.

PROFESSIONAL
I spent the majority of my professional career at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where I served as a staff therapist, supervisor, and eventually as the department coordinator. During my twelve years at UTMB, I focused my practice on patients with wounds, burns, and HIV/AIDS, in addition to serving the general acute population. I also served as an adjunct faculty member in the PT program at UTMB.

I am currently the Director of Therapy Services in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In this role, I primarily serve as an administrator but also spend time in research and serve as an adjunct faculty member in the PT program in the School of Health Sciences within the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

AFFILIATIONS
I am currently the Vice President of the Oncology Section and been an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association since 1989. I previously held positions of Treasurer as well as Chair of HIV Special Interest Group within the Oncology Section. In the past, I served as Secretary of the Texas Physical Therapy Association's Executive Board of Directors. I have served as a delegate to the APTA House of Delegates several times as well as various positions at the local and Chapter level in Texas and Minnesota.

AWARDS
1996 Employee of the Year, Department of Rehabilitation Services, University of Texas Medical Branch.

FAVORITE QUOTE
""Be the change you wish to see in the world." -Gandi

PERSONAL
I enjoy spending active time with my life partner and my 9-year-old daughter. We like to snow ski, water ski, boat, mountain bike, camp, hike, play golf, and travel. Since we are a two-physical therapist family, we spend great amounts of discretionary time reading and discussing the latest literature to remain abreast of our cutting-edge profession.
