Kathie Hummel-BerryIntroducing the Oncology Section’s newest board member, our President:  Kathleen Hummel-Berry, PT, PhD

PASSION
See to it that the graduates of all PT programs will be well-informed about cancer and about how it is experienced by patients.

PROFESSIONAL
Dr. Hummel-Berry is Professor and Director of the University of Puget Sound Physical Therapy Program, located in Tacoma, Washington.  She joined the UPS faculty in 1983.  She performed eight years of physical therapy practice in pediatric and then orthopedic settings.  Working at Children’s Medical Center (then Children’s Orthopedic Hospital), in 1979 Kathie had the opportunity to work with a number of children with childhood cancers, though back then we did not have the wonderful community that has since evolved in our Section on Oncology.

Member of the Women’s Health and Orthopedic Sections of the American Physical Therapy Association 

AWARDS
In 2005, Kathie received the Section on Women's Health award for research excellence.
Dr. Hummel-Berry has published in the Journal of Obstetrical and Gynecological Physical Therapy (now called the Journal of the Section on Women's Health), Rehabilitation Oncology, and Medical Problems of Performing Artists.

PERSONAL
Dr. Hummel-Berry is proud of her 2 grown children, David (25) who is a firefighter in rural Washington, and Allison (23) who begins medical school at Johns Hopkins this fall.  She lives with two dogs and a cat and enjoys singing with Seattle Women's Chorus.
